Did you know you really can bake bread in your crock pot?

Such a pleasant surprise!
It took about 2.5 hours from start to finish, I didn't have to proof the yeast, no first and second rises and I think it would work with just about any bread recipe. Since I feed a hoarde, I doubled this particular recipe and I left out the eggs. (It makes a more dense bread, the better to go with potato soup!)

4 tbsp yeast
1/4 c sugar
1 1/4 c milk
1 tsp salt
1/3 c butter (or oil or other fat - like mashed avocado)
2 eggs

Mix 2 cups flour and all the other ingredients in a bowl. Add additional flour while kneading as needed to make a smooth, silky dough. Lay a piece of parchment paper on the bottom of the crock pot. Shape then place "loaf" (shape will be determined by size/shape of your crock pot) on the parchment paper, put the lid on crock pot and turn it on high. Don't lift the lid until you start smelling the bread cooking. You can tell it is done when the top feels like a soft loaf of bread and is no longer mushy to the touch. Put it on a baking sheet under the broiler for 2-3 minutes to brown the top of the bread. As you can see, the rest of our loaf was lovely and golden already.
We are baking a second loaf even as I type this post... Nadia will now know how to use the crock pot to bake bread. It will be Brendan's turn, next!! The power did go out for about 15 minutes while it has been baking, so I'm curious to see if that affects our results.

Family consensus? It was "yummy, scrummy bread!"

Of course that description prompted a discussion of why we would call something we eat "scrummy" since scrummy sounds like scrum (a slang word we usually use to describe all of the ickiness left in the sink after drain the water used to wash dishes, before we rinse the sink) or , possibly, crummy (i.e. worthless, tasteless or poor quality).

For what it's worth, scrum is a real word. A rugby term, it means "a formalized contest for possession of the ball during a rugby game between the two sets of forwards who each assemble in a tight-knit formation with bodies bent and arms clasped around each other and push forward together against their opponents."

I've decided scrummy is a play on the word scrumptious....

Doesn't that make more sense?
