Five Minute Friday ~ Dive

Les porteuses d'eau - Young water carriers

Every day, driving around this city, I see beautiful young children like these girls diving and disappearing into the infrequent large metal dumpsters... or scrounging about trash piles strewn across the rutted, sandy roads... or picking and poking through refuse thrown behind shack-slash-boutiques... searching for something - anything, really - that might somehow be redeemed.

They bury their hands into messes that assault my nose and turn my stomach.

Somehow, they come up with previously unremarked or discarded treasures that given another opportunity and shown some patience and work become valuable and worthwhile.

Each day see Jesus in these kids.

Two thousand years ago, once and for all.
And still today... Every day.

He dives into the mess of this world... He scrounges about in the trashiness of every culture in this life... He picks and pokes through the icky stuff shoved way back and out of sight...

He redeems, renews and restores all that I never dreamed could be.

I'm so thankful and I'm learning to pray: "May others see this same Jesus in me."

Comme d'habitude, I linked up with Lisa-Jo (of Gypsy Mama fame) for another Five Minute Friday. It is Friday, after all!

You should, too!

Go ahead! "Set your timer, clear your head, for five minutes of free writing without worrying about getting it right."

The Rules

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community.

Leave me a comment (and the link) if you take a gander - I'd love to read what you write!

  2. Oh yes friend, that others would see Jesus in me as well. I love the beauty of the picture you shared and the contrast to the filth that so often covers all things of beauty in this world. And I love how God is more than willing to dig in and scoop down low and drag us from the depths. My parents were missionaries in India for a number of years and it is still funny to my mom how much we throw away here in America when in India almost everything is recycled. Some trash is another persons treasure. Great take on the prompt this week. I loved it.

    1. good on your mom, if she still struggles with the waste in America - because it is so, so easy to forget and become just like the norm all around.

thanks for your kind words and the return visit. i missed 5mf during the month of december, so it is good to be back. :-)

  4. Oh my, you have such a unique perspective. It never occurred to me to think of the word dive in such a way. We are so sheltered in the US in many ways. It is so sad that little children would have to do this. But Jesus did dive into our sin soaked world. What an analogy.

    blessings and love,
    Debbie

    1. your comment reminded me of something. we think it sad... but these kids here don't... it is just their life and they tend to make the most of the moment because one of the strong things about their faith & culture is that the present moment is all you are guaranteed (same for us, but we don't tend to think about it that way).

thanks for such sweet words! hope you are having a great weekend.
