When things are terrifying and not at all what they seem

Brendan is still working on his driver's license.

But he also had to get to Saginaw Valley for the day transfer students take any required tests, meet with an academic adviser and register for classes, AND talk to the people that tell you when your first bill or payment is due.

That left me with several hours to occupy while hanging around Saginaw. Since the mall is literally just down the road, that might be an obvious solution.

But, W. Africa kinda killed that for me... It isn't really a pleasurable experience - even when I'm alone and can just wander - any more...

Still, I drove there looking for a Barnes and Noble because bookstores and libraries are the kind of places I thoroughly enjoy and they are often found in malls.

Not so the case.

Thankfully, Target was just across the street. I knew I wanted to get something to drink and a snack, had a few things that I needed to pick up from Target as well, and figured I could find a book there to read. That's three birds with one stone!

Minutes later, I was wandering through Target, looking for their book section.

THIS is the book I picked up.

It was a mesmerizing read.

Susannah Cahalan was an up and coming writer for the Washington Post when for reasons still not understood, she lost her mind.

She descended into what she's called her "Month of Madness," becoming a totally different person. Hallucinations, seizures, discussions about extreme fatigue, schizophrenia, OCD, mental illness, withdrawal from alcohol dependence and finally an auto-immune form of encephalitis... She only has vague memories from that month but her family, her boyfriend, some of her co-workers, her doctors and other medical professionals,journals... and video tapes from her hospital stay... have helped her reconstruct some of that time.

Seizures landed her in an epileptic ward where her parents pushed and her doctors doggedly pursued an explanation for what was happening to her.

Susannah hopes that by sharing her story, others walking a similar path might be able to get the kind of help that gave her the second chance at life... that she almost missed because even though she was clearly totally not the person she had been weeks before, none of the standard tests run by the medical profession could identify a problem.

What could be more terrifying than that. To see with your very eyes that your child is not the person she was... and to have the doctors say, "But there's nothing wrong?"

One of the key things researchers have learned as they've continued to study this disease and other similar phenomena?

Sometimes people who've ended in psychiatric wards, with diagnoses of autism, schizophrenia, multiple personalities... and other terrifying diagnoses... could actually have had a neurological issue that needs to be treated with medications - just as was Susannah's case.

Coming from a family where that rather vague diagnosis of encephalitis has, in the past, reared its ugly head, I found this to be both a worthwhile, informative and fascinating read.

I've even heard rumors of a movie in the works... but I don't know if I'd be able to watch that!

And, if you'd like to hear Susannah Cahalan briefly share about her experience, be sure and check out this video.

One warning - there is some strong language at points in the book, so please be prepared if you decide to read it.

Five Minute Friday ~ Together

I'm not sure what it is with our extended families... on both sides...

So you'll have to let me know if you find this strange as well...

Right before we returned to Niger and the backside of the Sahara Desert in 2010, the last family hurrah took place at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. It is about as close as you can get to Niger in Michigan. Seriously.

...and this was Brendan's fb profile pic for almost the entire term. Maybe he changed it while we were in Scotland on the way home???
This time, on literally our first weekend "home" in Midland after three years away and five weeks of nonstop traveling, we met up with family near Sleeping Bear again, for a family reunion with the other side.

Good thing we weren't tired of the sand.

Actually, I don't think my kids ever get tired of the sand. It might only be me, but then again, I spend more time than anyone else sweeping it back out of my house again... and again... and again!

Reality though?

We might have found it a little ironic, but the place JUST. DIDN'T. MATTER.

Because we are family.

We are having fun, making memories, and celebrating...

together!

Somehow, when God said that it wasn't good for man to be alone... I don't think that just referred to marriage.

There's just something so magical about being together... and the place, the activity, the externals? They simply melt into unimportant.

That face just says it all.

Together, especially when we know not to take it for granted, is nothing less than beautifully thrilling!

**************************************************
Join up with Lisa-Jo of Gypsy Mama fame for today's Five Minute Friday write...
on the topic of together! She explains all the particulars.

And if you take a gander, be sure to let me know.
I'd love to read your take on today's word.

31 days... of dinner chez les Wrightlings... We've got Brendan! {day 10}

I knew all along I'd have to be doing this post when I started this 31 days "project."

I put project in quotes because that implies a lot of forethought and planning and... and my original topic would have been a project. This is much more of a glimpse into our house (or car... as the case may be) each day for life such as it is chez les Wrightlings. And sometimes that means very little forethought and planning and a whole lot of pure surviving and trying to have fun while doing so.

But, back to my original thought, I knew we'd be taking this trip and leaving the kiddos with their grandparents and I wouldn't be there to have dinner with them..., but I would be munching on something my big boy (and he is, bigger I mean, than when he left for college 2 months ago) and be so happy to be doing just that.

Bren and some of his new friends at school.
It was a long trip. Tim and I left at 10 p.m. on Tuesday night (after the church program and ice cream social) to drive to near Harrisburg, PA. We took turns - one driving while the other rested - stopped to sleep for a couple of hours at a rest area in Pennsylvania when we realized we were a couple of hours early - enjoyed the time to talk, but also the time to be just the two of us even when we only listened to music and weren't talking. We arrived on campus about an hour before Brendan was off work. We killed time by walking to the campus store where Tim bought a hat. I also caught up with one of the women I'd met while I was down for the international student orientation.

Then we caught up with Bren.

He hadn't packed yet, so we had to wait while he did that... got to meet a few of his friends. And visited with his roommate.

And then we were back on the road.

Construction was kinda crazy, but we made good time.

We stopped to eat once we were back in Michigan. Arby's was the restaurant of choice.

It was fun to listen to Brendan and his dad talk... and then to listen to the fluting we've not heard for 2 months.

What it really looked like when I didn't use the flash.
Grandpa Gene and Grandma Susan took care of the rest of the gang for us: a big slumber party at their apartment the first night, then getting them settled at home to wait for us - with another dear family friend a the house to help Rebekah - until we got home.

We pulled in the driveway a few minutes before Wednesday-to-Thursday midnight... 26 hours after we'd left.

We were tired.

I pulled myself out of bed to walk the kids to school the next morning - and Grandma Susan filled me in on dinner for the remainder of the Wrightlings:

McNuggets and fries from McDs.

When she reached the drive thru window to pay, she was told not to worry about it. The car in front had taken care of it...

...Wishing her good karma...

Thankful today for myboybeinghere, safety while traveling, my bed with cozy blankets and pillows, and for random acts of karma(?) kindness.

Donner Memorial Park

The name "Donner" is a bit infamous... but actually is a tragic and amazing story of survival. Ever heard of that Animal Planet series, "I Shouldn't be Alive?" It's got nothing on the series of unfortunate and ill-planned events that happened to this group of people.

Listening to, watching re-enactment videos, reading about this story once again... watching my children learn about this moment in history... re-emphasized the importance of not judging others until I've walked in their shoes... not saying, "I would've never done that!" without actually having been in the situation and not done that... because "there, but for the grace of God, go I..."

Some of the paintings in the museum were amazing...

This butterfly display captured our kids' attention for several minutes.

Waiting for the video to begin.

The "gang"

the memorial...

They say the snow that year was as deep as the stone pedestal part of the memorial... that's a lot of snow!

It was a sobering and informative morning... and then it was time for us
to start trekking east.
