Tempted to Tell ALL

“Mama, when we were at the library the other day, I was tempted to tell someone about Jesus and how He was born to save us. Is that wrong?”

I couldn’t help but smile.

Funny question for a missionary kid to be asking…

After all, isn’t that what missionaries do? Isn’t that what we teach kids that missionaries do?

Missionaries go, into ALL the world for this reason: telling ALL who have never heard or who have never believed or who just need to be reminded - ALL about Jesus.

The message is first one of confrontation - the horribly bad news that ALL, are sinners and that as sinners, we are unable - in and of ourselves - to DO ANYTHING to remedy our sin problem. Which brings us to the second part of the bad news: the required punishment for our sin is death.

Grasping that part of the message is necessary; thankfully it doesn’t stop there or we would ALL be without hope.

The second half of the missionary message tells of reconciliation and restoration. It’s the hopeful part… the better part.

ALL men need someone to save them...

when you turn SIX and you just love the Christmas season...

...and you ask for ice skates for your birthday, your birthday present isn't exactly a surprise since your parents are sure that your feet are needed to assure that said ice skates will fit.

We found out feet weren't needed, however - because they make adjustable kids' ice skates these days. How's that for neat?!!

So, as Mary and I were walking the length of the mall last night to get to Dunham's to purchase her skates, she's skipping along, grinning from ear to ear and singing along with the Christmas carols playing through the mall's sound system. She was so obviously delighted that her antics elicited smiles from most passerby's - even a group of teen guys in saggy pants, sunglasses and trench coats (otherwise, they might have made me a little nervous)!

I asked her if she was happy to be going to get her skates ~

"Yup! I'm happy about that Mama! But I'm really happy because I LOVE walking in the mall at Christmas time!" she answered.

"Why?"

"Because everyone keeps singing my name!"

I must have looked a little confused, so she joins in with the song playing throughout the mall:

"Have yourself a 'Mary' little Christmas!"

Hope you enjoy some of these fun pictures from our pipsqueak's past year!
"Let it snow!"
a cold beach in Georgia
funny mirrors
"Swing me higher!"
silly faces, silly poses
hanging with big bro, hunting tadpoles and garter snakes
the fam
Hartwick Pines
First day of first grade
more silliness
African cowgirl!
little legs biking Mackinac Island
learning about pottery
SHE chose the Christmas tree

"See my new ice skates!!!"

Oh! The literalness of he!

Awhile back, Jonathan and I were riding together in the truck. We came upon a construction zone and suddenly, my jabbery little guy became strangely silent.

I glanced over at him; he was clearly deep in thought.

I waited a few more minutes...

...but finally curiosity got the best of me.

"Hey Jon-man..."

"Ummm-hmmm," he mumbled distractedly.

"Whatcha thinkin' about? You stopped talkin' to me."

"That sign," he sighed.

"What sign?" I asked.

"The one at the beginning of when they started working on the road," he answered.

"A road sign?"

"Yes..." after which his voice trailed off. He was still distracted.

"Why are you thinking about a sign?"

"Because I'm trying to figure it out."

"Oh? What's there to figure," I prompted.

"Well," Jonathan said thoughtfully, "the sign said 'Hit Worker Fine. $10 000.'
Why would anyone think it was fine to hit a guy working on the road?
And would they really pay you $10 000 if you did it?"

Have I ever told you before?

I just LOVE that kid!

~ of bugs and maple buds ~

Spring, sorta, seems to have finally sprung in Michigan (although you wouldn't know by today's morning temperatures...) The grass is turning green, the huge pile of snow at the side of the church/school parking lot has almost melted (although I'm still not trying to cut through and take the short cut to school as the mud is more like quicksand), flowers are popping up in gardens as are seasonal flower shops around town, and the trees are budding.

We have a large maple tree in our front yard, and it is budding.

We've also recently had a severe thunderstorm with strong winds and some heavy rain... meaning red buds have fallen off and are dotting the yard and sidewalk.

Mary Michelle was so excited when she saw them...

"Mama! Rainy season red bugs are here! Yay!!"

When I told her that they weren't the rainy season red bugs, she asked for the seemingly billioneth time this year, "Why can't we go back to Niger?"

Oh... the things that make us homesick for our Niger home...

Still sipping hot chocolate... at the end of April...

Still in just her underwear, but snuggling with big bro...

Still smiling!

Survivor Scotland ~ Otherwise known as "The Night of the Midges"...according to Rebekah

"Highland midges are notorious UK summer pests.
They're found not only in Scotland
but also in areas of boggy and acidic soil in mainland Europe, Russia and China.
In Scotland, they are also known as the Highland biting midge, and for good reason,
as this species is responsible for 90% of the midge bites to humans.
It is the large, cloud-forming numbers
that help to make this tiny fly such a great nuisance.
In prime breeding grounds it has been estimated that larvae
can reach an incredible density of
24 million per hectare."

I think we found said density...

...not far from the Falls of Shinn.

Be sure and watch for glimpses of the swarming critters (Look outside the vans... through the windows - sometimes you can see them flying; other times, it is the shimmering...
It looked like a snow blizzard looking out from inside the van.)
in this video Rebekah took with her little camera.
Enjoy her commentary and the silly antics of the Wrightling tribe as well!

By the way, this version is lightly edited to remove all references to "flatulation,"
Mama & Daddy getting grumpy while being eaten alive
(we're only into complimentary authenticity),
super-wiggly-vertigo-inducing video,
overly embarrassing seconds...
as well as plain redundancy...
We also tried to maintain a reasonable length.

You can thank us for that later ~ except
some of you may not consider the result a reasonable length!

In that case, you can find video of the swarming midges at about
30 seconds
into the video.

"Why won't you help me?"

...my child angrily yelled!

Then ~

tears began to pool in those eyes...

then roll...

then pour...

down my furiously angry, tired and hurt dear one's face.

Same child didn't like it, though, when I asked what I should say to siblings when my helping one looked like it was hurting them, from their point of view.

My child also didn't like it when I asked if God should only help me in only the ways I designate agreeable.

That question functioned as a well placed Holy Spirit reminder to said offspring's mama... I had been writing out thoughts along those lines - literally - as I was summoned to referee the altercation leading to this conversation...

...a conversation resulting from a ridiculous argument over where specific mattresses were placed on the bedroom floor (we all often sleep in one room during hot season so we can use an air conditioner and keep the electric bill at least on the same target as reasonable).... and a refusal of all parties to consider compromise or a ceding of individual rights.

I've been thinking about this subject a lot
          - and God just won't be put in a box
                    - and that fact drives mere humans crazy.

We like to say God always... and then fill in the blank.

I do believe that. I believe He is always holy, always good, always loving, always true, always just, always everywhere, always all-powerful, always omniscient, always intimately involved and implicated in the affairs of men's lives.

It's just that sometimes, it doesn't feel that way or look that way or make sense at all. Maybe that's because He and I define good in a particular situation differently. Then just because His definition of good doesn't make sense to me, I declare it bad or improbably instead of simply trusting the One Who always, ultimately proves Himself true. I've got to give up this idea of insisting that everything He does make sense to me.

Sometimes, just like my kid, I bury my head in my pillow and cry out to God, "Why won't you just help me?"

Because...? God's plan, His responses to my cries, His actions towards me certainly haven't appeared, felt or resulted in anything I'd remotely qualify as "help!"

...at least not from my perspective.

Just like from my child's perspective...

Sobs finally spent, we talked about how it really doesn't make sense to come to God and say, "Help me... and this is what I want You to do and how I want You to do it and when I want it taken care of." That makes God nothing more than a genie in a bottle...

What I think will be most helpful in the moment really isn't most helpful or right when considered from the perspective of a lifetime...

Imagine how that effect could only be exponentially multiplied when considering God's point of view, the perspective of eternity?

*******************************************
So... what's your perspective?
Do you ever get mad at God for not helping you as you prescribed?

Please share about a recent time when your immediate ideas of help clearly did not mesh with God's plan for your help or rescue.

So, set your timer, clear your head, for five minutes of free writing without worrying about getting it right.

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

OK, are you ready? Please give me your best five minutes on..."

Beyond…

"How much do you love me?"

Every kid asks that question sometime, I think. All eight of mine have. If we're honest, we all keep asking that question the entirety of our lives. We want to know that someone, somewhere out there, loves us. We want to be reassured.

"How much do you love me?"

My husband made a game of it. "I love you 7 billion 2 hundred and 43 thousand one hundred and sixty-two!" said teasingly. It was always some number, crazy complicated and silly crazy huge. And then child comes up with something equally, sweetly confuse.

Every single one of our eight children love this game... still; it's code for "I love you, Daddy. I want your attention and a hug, too."

As we've home-schooled, read books, watched movies, we've added new phrases. So if you ever pop over for a cup of late morning tea and a chat, you might hear...

"I love you all the way to the moon!"

"I love you all the way to the moon, around it five times and back!"

"I love you all the way to the moon and back 75 times today."

"I love you all the way to the moon and back 75 times today and every day for the next 75 years."

"I love you till all the fur's rubbed off and a fairy makes you real."

"I love you forever and ever and its a very long time!"

"Take that bit of fluff out of your ear and listen to me tell you just how much Iove you..."

"I love you to infinity and beyond."

Then littlest one sleepily whispered one evening... "I love you to inifinity and beyond and then all the way back home to our couch for a little 'nuggle."

She's too young to grasp the significance of what she said, but she put into words for me an attempt to wrap in words the kind of love God has and enables His own to share.

Think about it:
"I love you to inifinity and beyond and then all the way back home to our couch for a little 'nuggle."
"I don’t think we always know what it is that causes hearts to connect and click and for [love] to grow. But... to endure, you have to learn to love the other not just because of the wonderful things you see or in spite of the frustrating, annoying things. I think you also have to let those annoying and frustrating things become dear to you, too – because they are part and parcel... it is also in those areas, sometimes, where it is easiest to see God working…" **

Because love travels with the one loved to infinity and beyond... and then comes back to the nitty gritty of every day real life and continues to hang out, there, too.

~ Afraid ~

We regularly have visitors in the house at night...

Crickets crawl out of who knows where and run rampant all over the house. Thankfully, their singing doesn't seem to disturb anyone's sleep because they get really loud.

For 9 months now, there always seems to be one living between the pantry closet and the kitchen counter - no way for me to get to him for a catch and release rescue - and he likes to keep me company when I'm cooking or baking early in the morning, before the rest of the house wakes up. Most of the time.... As I busy around in the kitchen he chirps and sings - unless I turn on the KitchenAid. Then he grows silent and resentful and may not chatter anymore until the next day.

At first, I thought they were crawling up from the sink and shower drains - but even when I cover them, they still show up.

Their favorite hang out seems to be the master bathroom, right off our bedroom. It is not unusual to see 10 to 15 of the little and not so little buggers running around if you make a bathroom trip at night and boy do they start chirping if you disturb their antics by flipping on the light.

Our M&M cracks me up, though, when it comes to dealing with these critters.

Someone, somewhere, told her not to mess with those crickets because if you do and they get irritated, they'll bite. Now, I've not done any research to find out who told her that or if it is actually true (I do try to avoid stepping on them, but more because that would just be gross and not because I'm worried about getting bitten), but what cracks me up is her reaction.

If she needs to make a bathroom trip during the night (and she frequently does) she begs me NOT to turn the light on. She doesn't want to know if they are there... she'd rather not see ANYTHING and  assume there's no danger or problem instead of allowing the light show her where potential danger lies so she can avoid, escape or rid her world of it (with a wad of tp and a quick flush).

It is easy to chalk that up to childhood immaturity...

So what, then, do we do with the truth of the following quote?

I'm praying the Lord shows me those areas where I've been choosing to stumble around blindly in the dark because I'm afraid of what I just might see if I flip on the light.

Small but mighty... she's a competitor...

...and it was my revelation of the day!

It totally caught me off guard.

...I guess I just didn't expect

such a fierce side

to our sweet little Elsie Mae...

She certainly doesn't look fierce, does she?

Yesterday was full of swimming races and competitions for the students of Sahel Academy... and Elsie Mae tagged along. It didn't faze her in the least that she was swimming against 3-6th graders... she was tickled pink just to be at the pool and a part of all the excitement.

She cracked me up as she swam her races... each time she'd touch the wall, she'd hardly take a breath before asking:
 "Did I WIN! Mama?"
This is the race where she did... and don't forget to notice that smile on her face in the very last photo!

...and they're off! GO ELSIE MAE!!!

Nadia cheering for her lil' sis!

She was the 1st to touch the wall!

See that super big grin of delight?
(Lucky me! I got the happy hug, too!)

Challenged by my child...

"Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for,
my joy and crown,

so stand fast in the Lord,

my dearly beloved...
Rejoice in the Lord alway:
and again I say, Rejoice.

Let your moderation be known unto all men.

The Lord is at hand.

 Be careful for nothing;
but in every thing
by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts and minds
through Christ Jesus.

 Finally, brethren,

whatsoever things
 are true,

whatsoever things
are honest,

whatsoever things
are just,

whatsoever things
are pure,

whatsoever things
are lovely,

whatsoever things
are of good report;

if
there be any virtue,
and

if
there be any praise,

think on these things.

Those things,
which ye have both learned,
and received,
and heard,
and seen in me,

do:

and the God of peace shall be with you."
Phil 4.1, 4-9

One of my kiddos came to me recently, giggling and dying to tell me a joke. We'd just arrived at the pool and said child was refusing to get in until I listened - so I pulled up a chair, patted the seat and the child sat down to begin the telling...

However, just a few sentences into the joke, I had to stop my precious one. The joke had rapidly turned crude and I felt the Holy Spirit clearly say, "You can't listen to this... you can't encourage ******** in the repetition of these types of jokes." The recounter quickly assured me that this was the only bad part and the ending was so funny that it was worth it. That is dangerous ground... a slippery slope...

And I felt totally caught between a rock and a hard place... with more questions than answers and definitely having no clue how to proceed. This was not one of those things I'd learned in Parenting 101...

  • Who had told my child a joke like this? (I'd like to give that one a piece of my mind!)
  • Hadn't we done a better job of parenting? (Or could this one be innocent and not recognize the implications and innuendo of what had just been said? Umm... I didn't really think so.)
  • Why in the world would my kid think this sort of thing was funny - when it was obviously crude? (And why in the world is this child telling this sort of joke to Mom?)
  • How in the world do I gently and firmly correct without crushing spirit and damaging relationship? (I need to let this dear one know that I could never approve of such a joke... and neither could the Savior s/he professes to follow - but I also don't want to dam up communication. In some senses, I'm honored to be trusted well enough to have one of my kids share a "risky" joke.)
  • How do I let the Holy Spirit be the teacher... because I don't even have any ideas this time?
  • What if my child doesn't listen to the Spirit and continues to tell or repeat this sort of vulgarity?
  • How do I teach graciously and gently stopping... leaving the scene when one of their buddies begins to do or say something... and the Holy Spirit quietly whispers, "This is not pleasing to me... it should not be pleasing or entertaining to you..."?
  • How do I model every day... help teach them to internalize and live every day the words of Philippians 4 scribed above?
It was obvious that feelings were hurt and that my child felt a bit betrayed when I would not listen... but by God's grace, we continued talking. I shared how not listening to the Holy Spirt when He speaks sears our conscience... it hardens us for the next time making it more difficult to respond the way God wants. I re-iterated several times that for me to continue to listen to that joke would be sinful, for me. I shared about how hard it is a) to say no, b) to gently ask someone to stop, or c) to graciously and quietly leave the scene when they won't stop or when asking is inappropriate - especially when someone you want to please or impress is involved... be it peers, an older siblings' friends, extended family, folks from school who don't know Jesus, parents, grandparents, etc.

I also shared how this was the very first time, sitting by the pool with my own child, that I myself was courageous enough to obey- stopping someone from sharing something that would have been sin for me to hear. In the past, if I've done anything, I've simply ducked out of the situation, sometimes deceptively. I had never tried to gently, lovingly and graciously confront. I had never before said to someone engaging in unwholesome communication to please stop, because I was Holy Spirit convicted, found it offensive and didn't want to hear the rest. I had never had the courage until right then, that very moment, with my own child. Would I have the same courage if it was Daddy? or an older friend, an older relative? someone with whom I work? I haven't... yet, but through God's empowerment, I pray that will begin to change.

I think... I hope... it was comforting to know that even for Mom as an adult, self-extraction from a situation that compromises our integrity before our God is scary, hard, sometimes painful and may result in consequences that continue... and continue to hurt. I'm also relieved that even though this was one of the harder parenting conversations I've ever had, the child respondedly sweetly... teachably... to God be the glory!

I'm sure this won't be the last time this kind of discussion takes place. Psalm 1 says, "Blessed is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly... nor standeth in the way of sinners... nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." I want my children to have this blessing. I want this blessing. Thus, I must work on this very thing. I cannot change the fact that people I respect, seek to honor, love and trust, and whom I believe seek to follow Jesus are still sinners. Their conversation and actions can be, at times, ungodly, and if I listen, if I participate... I sin, I encourage others in their sin and I lose that blessing spoken of in Psalm 1. And only God knows the power of this sort of gentle testimony before those who don't yet know Him.

This is so important to me, as a mama, that maybe... with the Lord's help... if I begin to model this response before my children... they'll "catch" a biblical behavior that I have no idea how to teach, they'll learn an obedience I'm not quite sure how to do myself.

...Not to mention that I keep thinking back to the theme of one of yesterday's posts: "Why do you call me Lord, Lord and do not do what I say?"

How do you handle this sort of situation in your life,
in your family, with your children?

How do you disciple (or plan to disciple)
your children (or children with whom you work)
as they face this very sort of thing?

How do you encourage others around you
to follow those quiet, but difficult promptings of the Holy Spirit?
