of alarm clocks and such

My kids have a favorite radio station and they always ask to listen when we are commuting back and forth from school. It isn't a Christian station - the organization Tim works with has an application in with the government and they are just waiting on final approval from the government... I think - and so sometimes we turn the volume down for a song or conversation (and then discuss why we needed to turn it down). For the most part, however, the station tends to be family-friendly, is great French practice and is often downright hilarious, especially when the radio hosts begin to share interesting tidbits they've run across in the news, on the internet, etc.

Such was the case yesterday afternoon on the way home from school.

Apparently, a study has been done about the most effective way to get kids out of bed in the morning.

As a mom of more-than-a-couple-still-remaining-at-home and even with the heavy traffic through construction zones, I instantly tuned in to the conversation. For, as most mamas know, especially those who have teens, sometimes you literally have to grab that young'un by the leg and physically drag them out from under the covers for even a groaning/moaning response. This week, I became a 23 year veteran of this parenting gig, yet I don't have this one near figured out. So, I was all ears to learn what the researchers had discovered.

One conclusion was that, especially for kids and teens, alarm clocks are simply not effective. Younger bodies sleep longer and usually much deeper than the old folks with whom they rub shoulders. It is documented that children and youth often (if not usually) sleep through alarm clocks, fire alarms, emergency sirens, tornadoes... Hence sometimes, one of our basement dwelling teens' alarms will wake me, all the way up on the 2nd floor, before it ever causes them to stir.

Yes - I write truth - even if they later deny it.

I also know for a fact that every single one of my kids is delighted when I wake them up by quietly entering their room leaving the light off, sit on the side of the bed (or snuggle right down under the covers with them), stroke their hair, scratch their back, and whisper softly next to their ear. The researchers found that this method was not only more pleasant for the child, but that youth are awake, literally with in seconds, when awoken gently. Compare that to the minutes, on average, required to drag a child from sleep when an obnoxious, obtrusive and very loud noise began to sound. It's also important to include that the gentle, rapid awakening resulted in happier, more compliant little people in the morning as well.

Also interesting? A female's voice - a mother's voice - was the voice that was effective. Dad whispering just didn't have the same impact.

Interesting eh?

As I've been mulling this over, I was also struck by just how God often uses that same, gentle approach when waking us from spiritual sleep.

Sometimes, it feels like I am slapped in the face with truth or a need to change. But more often, it is the gentle whispering of the Spirit when I feel wrapped in the love of godly, encouraging friends, a surprising comment from one of my kids hidden in the humor of our family life, a passage of Scripture that replays over and over in one of the songs we listen to almost every day, a simple word that repeatedly comes up in all of the above and other situations that reminds me to return to God's truth and His way.

This shouldn't surprise me. After all, the Word teaches that all the flashy, amazing and brazen have little effect if not also smothered with tenderness and love:
"If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails..."

Love never fails. I don't think that means love is like a fairy godmother's magic wand... I never realized until just recently that I've always treated those words like that, thinking, "Just gotta love enough and things will somehow work out." Rather, I've now come to think it means that love just keeps on keeping on and keep on and keeping on. Regardless. Regardless of the result or lack of result.

And, I'm challenged once again, even though I always fall short, to love like that.

I can be okay with falling short because where I am weak, He is strong. I can also rest in the other verse that came to mind as I reflected on that alarm clock study: "Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me... my hope is in the Lord, forevermore." (Psalm 131)

Five Minute Friday - Morning

(Late again... I know... But here I am, finally!)

I LOVE mornings... early, early mornings. Before the sun, before the birds, before the alarm clock and the coffee maker, before the rest of the world... before everyone and everything except time with my Savior.

There's something about the dark, quiet - after I've rested - that draws like a magnet.

As a swimming teen - first thing early morning workouts were my favorites. Sometimes I'd actually swim faster then, than in an actual competition. Swimming laps outdoors in the summer as the sun rose... those memories still leave me speechless. Nothing but the sound of water splashing, the clock ticking and praying away stroke after stroke after stroke.

In college, waking early to find a quiet dorm lounge where I could study without disturbing my roommate resulted in a more productive homework session.

Rising early to take off driving - whether heading to or from home - the road quiet and peaceful and mostly free of traffic with soft music or provocative discussions or Bible teachers on the radio... the miles simply melt away.

Once becoming a mama, early morning feedings then later watching sweetness sleep nestled next to me made sleep almost undesirable. Quiet times to rock and read and snuggle and visit and beat from-the-heart-thanks are treasures.

Then there are the wee morning hours with sick ones. Honestly, I used to resent those times, until I grasped that those really were blessings in disguise, God offering the gift of more time to rock and read and snuggle and visit and pray and serve my family.

Later, enveloped by heat and living life on the backside of the Sahara Desert, mornings because the best time to bake bread... and to feed on the Word of God. Sometimes, it permitted unexpected messenger conversations with friends and family afar. Other times, this allowed for sweet surprises and dozens of donuts that didn't come from Dunkin's, Crispy Creme's or Tim Horton's... but rather my own kitchen... my own hands... my own sweat.

Today, sometimes mornings are times to lie quiet and still beside my husband, listen to him breathe (or sometimes softly snore) and remember while remembering - to be thankful for all that God has allowed since bringing us together, for all that He will bring in our time that remains.

I can't forget Saturday morning cleaning where the whole family pitches in - the music blares while we dance with brooms or scrub a toilet in time with the beat. During one season, we were privileged to watch love blossom when he came to help her... with her "jobs." Now that's love!

And finally,  this oft' prayed proverb: "The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day."

May it ever be so...

31 days... of dinner chez les Wrightlings... DOUGHNUT Saturday! {day 13}

Okay... so we didn't ACTUALLY do DOUGHNUTS for DINNER.

It was breakfast.

But since breakfast would certainly be the more interesting meal for that day (we'd be on the road again that night) and since it is our blog and since we do have some author/creator liberty here, this "meal" ain't "dinner."

And it does count for today's 31 day post.

Additionally? That's not to say we've never done doughnuts for dinner. In fact, my kids would lobby heavily to do so. We've also been known to dunk oreos into cold milk and call that good for an evening meal.

But I digress.

In honor of Brendan's presence with this weekend and to fulfill a promise made long ago (like years), we had homemade doughnuts for breakfast and invited friends.

After our last home assignment and we headed back to Niamey, I learned how to make doughnuts... which developed into a last Saturday morning of the month tradition for our family... and  we then expanded to including different friends and visitors whenever we could. This tradition usually involves me getting up in during the wee hours of a Saturday morning (not a sacrifice... it is alone time that I LOVE!) to have several dozen doughnuts ready near 9 or 9:30ish. Sometimes it is just one basic type of doughnut. Other times I pick out several recipes to follow. Sometimes I get super creative and start inventing totally new to us doughnuts. Sadly, those are rarely repeatable... since I forget or don't have time to write them down in the moment.

For what it is worth - after my third "time to make the doughnuts" morning Stateside, I'm discovering that I make better yeast doughnuts when in West Africa. Cake doughnuts, on the other hand, are turning out better on the west side of the Atlantic..

We did have a couple of other visitors stop by - but they were on their way, diving into their busy Saturdays, before I got my camera out and started snapping photos... or assigning a child to take a few... but I was super happy to see Cousins Mike and Laura pull in the driveway.

As our friends started arriving, Brendan was busy helping me in the kitchen. I believe he was sweeping. Either he almost panicked, saying "I haven't brushed my teeth... I gotta run and take care of that!" or he saw a way outta work.

It didn't matter, however, when his sis immediately retorted, "Why are you worried about that before you eat doughnuts? Planning to kiss someone?" His ears turned red (our friends, both families, have only and all girls...) and he kept right on sweeping.

Probably the smart choice considering how outnumbered he was at the moment!

Chocolate Cream Filled Vanilla Sugar Doughnuts

Pumpkin Spice Doughnuts with Buttermilk Glaze
~my faves... this time around... although the chocolate cream filled were a close second~

Krispy Kreme (baking sheet in back)
Grapefruit Donuts (front left - pink icing)
Old Fashioned Sour Cream Donuts (front right)

I ran out of glaze... so used up the rest of the vanilla sugar for several doughnuts, too.
And don't forget the doughnut holes!

Our conversation over the course of the morning touched on many different topics - a sacred music concert led to Irish step dancing which morphed into to hula hooping and belly dancing... and it just got stranger - and the laughter louder - from that point on. Squirrel soup and guys who love to hunt, the pointlessness of shoes, germ-a-phobia and how the hot tub at Great Wolf Lodge was just nasty... or was it?, side by side texting conversations, curly hair and perms... or not, drama and exaggeration, third world toilets - or lack thereof - and how both Rebekah and Nadia have grown up thinking the painted warnings in Niger reminding men not to aim at the walls when they used the bathroom were because urine would somehow cause the walls to crumble. That might have been the moment Tim decided we needed to discuss baseball instead.

We laughed at little kids playing hide and seek - where we spent a lot more time "seeing" the hiders and very little time seeing or hearing the "seeker." And I'm pretty sure parents stopped counting how many doughnuts some of the munchkin crew consumed. I was definitely thankful for cider, orange juice, chocolate milk and additional cinnamon rolls that our friends contributed.

We also talked Olympic wrestling - but actually ended up observing real life wrestling as several of those kids started playing king of the couch.

It was a great morning and we're looking forward to inviting more of our Michigan
(and other) friends to join us.

Or... if you happen to hear it is happening on a particular Saturday,
feel free to pop in for a doughnut and a Saturday morning visit.
We'd love to see you and the door is always open.

Well... unless it isn't!

We didn't sleep in last Saturday... even though we didn't set the alarm...

Wonder why?

Because hot air balloons filling with air and lifting off and flying are actually quite noisy...
